DRUG ABUSE
“Ring…ring…ring…ring…ring…!” The school bell rang incessantly.
All the school children dashed out of their classrooms as swift as arrows and John was no exception, with smiles all written on his face. He felt on cloud nine as his teacher had just praised him in front of all his classmates for being a helpful boy.
As he was passing by his block on his way home, he overheard some commotion… coming from a nearby multi-storey carpark.
“What the heck? Pass me the thing…damn it! I need it urgently,” a man barked.
“Shut up! Can’t you wait for your turn, pig!” echoed another aggressively.
“Silence! Can’t you two just lower your voices and stop bickering. Do you all want the whole world to hear, is it?” a hoarse voice retorted angrily.
Startled by the conversation, John decided to investigate. He inched nearer and hid behind the brown pillar with caution and peeped.
Silence took over for a moment and there was tranquility. Occasionally, only the rustling of the leaves from some nearby trees could be heard.
John saw three burly, skull-tattooed teenagers with disheveled hair, wearing black t-shirts with skull prints, at one corner of the dimly lit carpark. At a glance, he realized that these few guys were up to nothing good. He inched nearer again so as to have a clearer view of what those few fellows were doing.
“Plomp!”
“Who’s that there?” one of the guys blurted.
John immediately picked himself up and tried to run but his legs were like jellies. Fear and trepidation overtook him and he stood rooted to the ground with big beads of perspiration dripping from his forehead.
“Meow…meow…meow…meow…!”
“Oh, it is just the silly cat meowing again, just ignore it,” came a reply.
John was saved in the nick of time by the cat. After he regained composure, he peeped cautiously at what those guys were doing again…
The three guys, whom John suspected were drug addicts, were abusing drugs - one was sniffing from a can of glue; another was injecting himself with a small syringe while the last was taking drugs.
“Don’t move boy and keep quiet!” someone commanded softly from behind John, covering his mouth with one hand.
“What the hell is going on now? Am I doomed?” thought John to himself.
Out of the blue, it looked like a whole battalion of soldiers was attacking the enemies, cornering them from all sides.
“Face down on the floor and don’t move or we will shoot!” the leader of the troop commanded, pointing a short pistol at the teenagers.
The three suspects put up a good fight but to no avail, as they were outnumbered and were manhandled by the strong arms of the law. Immediately, they were arrested.
John did not realize that those were the police and narcotics officers all dressed in home attire so that it was easier for them to do their rounds. He was thankful that he was not injured by those teenagers and learnt that they had been following that group of teenagers for quite a while already. Those drug offenders if convicted would be sent to the drug rehabilitation center for treatment.
John believes that the community will be a safer place to live in if everyone stays away from drugs.
